Dipped in sweet and sour sauce – introduction to Kevin Michael Klipfel’s photography

Today I am very pleased to present photographic work of Kevin Michael Klipfel. This short piece, an introduction to his work, will initiate a series of this week’s posts: first an interview, then an opportunity to showcase one project and finally a selection of one photo picked from the images published during the whole week, which will be later printed on a t-shirt.

Kevin Michael Klipfel is an American photographer interested in candid art photography. His images have got this quickly stolen quality where he expresses his observation on life using his immediate surroundings, which he makes very interesting in their everydayness.

I was strangely attracted to one of his images of a girl at the food stall selling among probably other food items egg roll sticks and I immediately felt the phrase ‘dipped in sweet and sour sauce’ displayed on the counter was not only the perfect self caption in the best spirit of Walker Evans but a sort of a manifesto of Kevin’s photography. He is portraying the life that surrounds him. And sometimes it’s crazy colourful and fake and full of loud super deals on jumbo rolls and soft drinks and we are just stuck there, in the middle of this chaos, like the seller from his image, standing behind the till in an amusement park and looking across the frame in an anticipation for the new customers. And sometimes it only displays an ornate façade but when we open a door we discover that what is hidden behind is just a toilet.

Today I invite you to enjoy Kevin’s photography and have a taste of the colourful melancholy he so brilliantly captures.
