Introduction to Aso Mohammadi’s photography

In Aso Mohammadi by Ula

Today I would like to introduce you to work of Aso Mohammadi. This short piece, an introduction to his work, will initiate a series of this week’s posts: first an interview, then an opportunity to showcase one of his projects and finally a selection of one photo picked from the images published during the whole week, which will be later printed on a t-shirt.

Born in 1990 in Kurdistan, Aso Mohammadi lives and works in Lausanne. Currently, he is studying at l’Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne in photography. I came across his work on-line and immediately was drawn to it. His bright, bold use of colour catches your eye straight away and very quickly you are immersed in his world of everyday objects made unusual, cacophony of patterns and unexpected juxtapositions.

This boldness in use of colour vibrates with pure energy sharing some of it with the viewer, which I am sure is part of the attraction one feels when first encountering the work of Aso.

There is this hidden tension in his imagery, so well constructed in this photography of a hand holding a fish. One can’t not be sure if it is still alive or dead or on the brink, the situation is very vague. There is a dramatic internal movement of the depicted situation contrary to the very static composition of the image. This contrast between content and form is one of the ways Aso creates the tension I mentioned before.

The fish image is a perfect example of a very gentle and subtle side of his work. Its perfect counterpart would be the dog image. There is lots of tension in this photograph too, but nothing is hidden, everything is exposed and upfront. The doubling of the hand and the upper jaw, the repetition of the similar shape and gesture makes that exposure even more powerful.

Aso’s photography is one of those very memorable experiences which doesn’t happen very often. He creates images that will stay imprinted on your memory.
